So what’s this all about?

In a nutshell, The Isles Project is an initiative to bring the story of a relationship – between people, nature and lands of the British Isles – to life.

In modern times, mainstream history and cultural activity (e.g. museums, film, theatre) has largely been about human history. The ‘more-than-human’ – that is to say, the natural world that so significantly sustains and interlaces with human culture – has been swept to the margins. The Isles Project therefore aims to bring this interface – between people and the more-than-human – to the fore so as to renew and foster curiosity, contemplation and creativity in relation to this story. It makes sense, given environmental challenges, to make ‘being here’ as enticing as possible.

This website is being used purposefully – to archive material that, over time, will enable patterns to emerge and themes to be discerned. The site is also a place for virtual collections – such as the emerging chronology and a booklist – to build up.
